Veterans Getting a Head-Start in the Oilfield in the Field and in the Boardroom
Having recently discussed the job opportunities available for Veterans in the Oil & Gas Industry, I was surprised to see an article in Fortune discussing the very same topic (Click here to see full article). Although it may not have been specific to only the oilfield, it did prove my point that companies are seeking these types of leaders.
Many oilfield companies have been hiring Veterans to fill offshore positions in the field for years. More recently, many of these same companies are implementing programs to hire Officers with leadership experience and a college degree to specially designed programs to help them succeed in the civilian workforce.
Offshore Programs
Former soldiers have an advantage in getting offshore work. From their experiences in the armed forces, they have many of the special skills that oilfield companies love. For instance, soldiers have the following:
- Ability to think quickly in a stressful situations
- Ability to work in harsh conditions
- A natural tendency to lead
- Used to being away from family and friends extended periods of time
- An inclination to be a hard worker
- Ability to learn new tasks and quickly work up the employment ladder
Candidates that have learned a trade, such as a mechanic or similar, will also have a greater advantage when looking for work in the field.
Office Programs
The newest trend in recruiting ex-military are programs such as GE Oil & Gas’ – Junior Officer Leadership Program. Recruiters are looking for Officers that have significant leadership experience and hold a college degree. The selected candidates are most often put through a rotation program, much like some engineering rotations. The candidate will be placed in a number of specific roles to quickly teach them the different aspects of the company so that they can be successfully transitioned into the position for which they were hired. This is a great way to get started with an oilfield career, and by understanding many different roles from your previous rotations, you can quickly move up the corporate ladder.

Since starting this website, I’ve been asked many questions about the Oil & Gas Industry. Without a doubt, the question I’m asked the most is, “How do I find a job on an offshore oil rig?” So in this post, I plan to explain the best way to find employment on an offshore drilling rig.
Why are so many people looking for oil rig jobs?
Working on a drilling rig can be an exciting experience. You will be on the forefront of technology, and a vital part of a world class team. More importantly, you can have a job with great pay, excellent benefits, and job security. A lot of oilfield workers earn a good living for themselves and for their family that they just could not earn in another field.
What kind of job can I expect to get just starting out on a rig?
The starting point for an oil rig job would be the Roustabout. Roustabouts can earn between $40,000 to $60,000 a year just starting out, working only half of the year.
What are the requirements to become an offshore worker?

Rowan Gorilla IV
I ran across these pictures of the Rowan Gorilla IV while I was looking for some amazing pictures I had taken of the Cajun Express. The Cajun Express pictures were taken from an Edison Chouest work boat. There was a broken down helicopter on the helideck of the Cajun Express that was caused by a plastic bag being sucked into the intake. We had to land on a nearby drillship, which may have been the Discovery Deep Seas if I remember correctly, and from there, we took the work boat to the rig.
Unfortunately, it looks like I lost those pictures, but I thought I would post this one of the Gorilla IV. The Rowan Gorilla IV is one of the most amazing jack-ups I have ever seen. It is massive! I have a couple more pictures that I will be putting up at our Flickr Page if you would like to see more.

Why are so many people interested in working in the middle of the ocean, away from family and friends, in such a dangerous job? Look below to see my top 10 reasons:
- The pay is awesome! Even starting out, most roustabouts earn almost $50,000 a year.
- You only work half of the year! Most rig workers are on a rotation of 7 days on and 7 days off, or 14 days on and 7 days off.
- Variety is the spice of life. Drilling rigs move from well to well. Rigs may be in the same location for a few months, but may be moved to the other side of the world to exotic locals. You have the chance to work all around the globe!
